SPARK

OpenCampfire created our very own framework called SPARK to help guide our campfires.

SPARK gives us a simple structure for each session, so we can listen to each other a bit more deeply. Firekeepers can use SPARK to guide the campfires, and participants can use it to practise reflective listening skills that build connection, empathy, and trust.

We introduce SPARK at the beginning of every campfire as a gentle refresher, and will also offer one-off training sessions for those who want to explore it more deeply.

It’s based upon Our Principles, and we’re likely to update it as we learn from building our community!

what SPARK stands for:

S – Share

Everyone has the chance to share, or simply listen.
Each person has 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the group size.

P – Permission

Feedback is only given with consent.
After sharing, each person can choose whether they would like reflective feedback from others. This is not advice-giving, but a chance to feel heard and met.

A – Acknowledge

Show that you are really listening.
When giving feedback, begin by acknowledging what you heard in the person’s share.
For example: “I heard you say…” or “You said you felt…”

R – Reflect

Offer reflective feedback.
Reflective feedback helps build empathy and connection. It is about sharing what stood out to you or how the person’s words landed with you.
For example: “When you said X, I felt…”

K – Kindness

Take part with kindness.
Everyone is here because they may be carrying something difficult. Please treat yourself and others with care.
For example: “I appreciate you for…”

P.S. SPARK is not about getting it right. It’s about showing up and listening to each other as humans.
