OpenCampfire uses a framework called SPARK to guide our campfires.
It offers a simple structure for each session and helps us practise reflective listening skills that build connection, empathy, and trust.
It’s really simple – it just helps us listen to each other a bit more deeply.
We introduce SPARK at the beginning of every campfire as a gentle refresher, and we will also offer one-off training sessions for those who want to explore it more deeply.

what SPARK stands for:
S – Share
Everyone has the chance to share, or simply listen.
Each person has 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the group size.
P – Permission
Feedback is only given with consent.
After sharing, each person can choose whether they would like reflective feedback from others. This is not advice-giving, but a chance to feel heard and met.
A – Acknowledge
Show that you are really listening.
When giving feedback, begin by acknowledging what you heard in the person’s share.
For example: “I heard you say…” or “You said you felt…”
R – Reflect
Offer reflective feedback.
Reflective feedback helps build empathy and connection. It is about sharing what stood out to you or how the person’s words landed with you.
For example: “When you said X, I felt…”
K – Kindness
Take part with kindness.
Everyone is here because they may be carrying something difficult. Please treat yourself and others with care.
For example: “I appreciate you for…”
P.S. SPARK is not about getting it right. It’s about showing up and listening to each other as humans.
